SAGA SIG
in capture, by Shawden Sheabar, August 25th, 2010Saga Sig takes us on a journey of mystery, the whimsical, and secluded existence

Originating from the nature emporium otherwise known as Reykjavic, Iceland, the talent of 23 year old photographer Saga Sig can best be considered a direct product of her upbringing when at the young age of 8 she picked up her first camera to capture the beautiful surroundings of her home. She now studies photography at the London School of Fashion and is steadily assembling a string of collaborations with clients such as Dazed & Confused, I love Fake, Lurve, or Vogue Korea.
Taking a look at some of the titles to her works such as Garden of Enchantment, A Daughter of Darkness, Walking on a Dream, and Fallen Angels you’ll immediately notice it’s an ebb and flow between the whimsical and mysterious almost like an interplay of the Rococo and Gothic periods come 2010. Except in this case, time doesn’t really matter. Her photos all stand still, frozen eerily in silence and abandonment as though shot at a forlorn corner of the earth with the dancing of shadows and light instigating a slight indication of terrestrial activity.

The staging of these scenes can be attributable to her love for story-telling in fashion, particularly with the history of vintage pieces and the experimentation with colours, prints, and textures. If you think of the wild escapades and lavish style of Marchesa Luisa Casati, you’ll come pretty close to the sort of effects she likes to achieve. In addition to a bit of inspiration drawn from Helen Levitt, Irina Ionesco, Dorothea Lange, Nan Goldin, Ellen Von Unwerth, Sarah Moon, Wendy Bevan, Annie Leibovitz, and Lina Scheynius.
