Barbara Í Gongini
in style, by Shawden Sheabar, August 8th, 2010Gongini’s protagonist for A/W 2010 knows no tribe, she is her own habitat

A traveling nomad, her vesture becomes the scaffold to her evolving home. Using raw elements, naturally-occuring colours, and the regulations of purity and simplicity, the engineering of a new habitat built around the infrastructure of her body begins to assemble.

Holding the blueprints to the masterplan is Barbara Í Gongini, vanguard to the megapole of Nordic design. For her A/W 10 collection, the pieces involve a great deal of layering, corrugated fabrics, and voluminous silhouettes accessorized with oversized leather backpacks, knitted scarves, furs, and sharded hosiery. The color philosophy remains minimalistic, appearing in shades of slate, sand, and obsidian.

Trained at the Danmark Design Skole, Institue of Unica Design, Gongini grounded her company in 1996 and currently operates both divisions including Barbara Í Gongini, the art and design experiment lab, and the Black Line which is the more understated, commercial annex. She has been featured in many print-editions such as Dansk, Tush, Fjords, Dear Sister, and Glass magazine and presents at showrooms during all major fashion weeks in Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, and NYC.
